Oakland Turnverein Gemischter Chor
When it comes time to describing the fondness for singing by
the German people, there is just no easy way to
begin. Whenever a significant number of German speaking
people gather, all one needs to do is hum a few bars of a familiar
refrain, and let the German love for music take its course.
German singing ranges from the familiar drinking songs
to Wagnerian opera; from songs about nature to songs about love;
from hearty and robust to light and soft.
Traditionally, German choirs are composed of male voice only
(Männer Chor), female voices only (Damen chor), and choirs of
men and women (Gemischter Chor). In Oakland, every
Wednesday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the Oakland
Turnverein Gemischter Chor meets for an evening of singing and
comeraderie. Each year, they put on three major
concerts: Spring Concert (Frühlingskonzert), Fall concert
(Herbstkonzert), and Christmas Concert (Weihnachtskonzert.)
If you are interested in joining the choir, you can stop by the
Bjornson Hall (2258 MacArthur Blvd) in Oakland some Wednesday
evening. Visitors are always welcome.
